Our History

Who are we ?

A short history of the creation of Kumnit Kumar

CIAI legacy

For over 20 years, the Italian organization CIAI has been caring for thousands of vulnerable children in Cambodia, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive in a more equitable society. In Siem Reap, through the School of Arts, hundreds of children have learned classical Khmer music and dance, forming their own association of artists called Tlaitno. In Pailin, the 'My School' initiative supported children's participation in the management of their schools, leading to improved school environments, sanitation, and playgrounds, while also promoting children's governance capacities. In Mondulkiri, the mobile clinic has enhanced access to essential health services for indigenous children and pregnant women living in remote villages of the province. The 'Street to School' project in the Andong community welcomes children from impoverished backgrounds to learn, play, and be safe in a child-friendly center where their voices are always heard.

Listening to children

Over the years, CIAI and its staff have gained expertise and experience in protecting child rights in Cambodia, developing a shared vision regarding the importance of children's voices and the involvement of families in sustainable child development practices. Working alongside children and parents' committees, CIAI staff initiated the process of establishing their own local organization, which was officially registered in September 2017 under the name of Kumnit Kumar (Children's Thoughts). This organization, founded on active participation from children and the community, began crafting its own initiatives to promote child participation, education, and development. Kumnit Kumar recognizes the challenges faced by at-risk and vulnerable children and their communities as they strive to navigate daily life and develop their own solutions.
